PVC board (often called expanded or foamed PVC) is a rigid sheet of plastic—i.e. polyvinyl chloride—board with a fine, smooth face that takes ink cleanly. It’s lightweight, yet strong and rigid. It always stays flat, which makes a great material for printing, because graphics look crisp and edges route or drill without splintering.
You can direct-print with UV or latex, apply cut vinyl, or laminate for extra abrasion resistance. But even without the extra treatment it stands up pretty well to moisture and most chemicals, and is often the go-to budget-friendly solution for signage. Especially because PVC finishes nicely (bevels, V-grooves, edge paint) and looks slick even with budget constraints, it’s often used for sign displays, menu and door plates, coasters, wall panels, and wayfinding where a polished, professional look matters.
Is the PVC board waterproof?

Yes, completely. You can leave it out in a rainstorm, and it won't matter: PVC has a closed-cell structure and is non-absorbent, so the board won’t swell, rot, or delaminate in damp areas or with routine cleaning.
Pretty much the only things that can damage a PVC board are harsh, abrasive solvents (we’ll talk more about that below) and high heat, which can soften the plastic or dull the colors. That said, in your regular everyday environments where humidity and warmth are a given—think kitchens, lobbies, bathrooms, etc.—PVC keeps its shape and finish without fuss.
Can PVC boards be used outside?

Yes, they can—but not all PVC is the same and sometimes the thickness and hardware may not be up to some particular site. Sure, PVC is largely seen as weatherproof, but, like every other material out there, it does wear and tear. And some environments do a little more wear and tear than others. Which is why you should match your PVC to the spot you intend to use it at.
Thicker gauges (6–13 mm / ¼″–½″ and up) can stand up to the wind better and hold up for years in typical conditions; meanwhile a thinner, 3–5 mm, board is best for short-term gigs (think about 12 months) or sheltered spots.
Sun exposure, color (white runs cooler), mounting method, and wind load all affect lifespan—the harsher the conditions, the shorter the PVC will be able to maintain its shiny, vivid look. For tougher locations, use screws with fender washers or a simple frame, and leave a little room for thermal expansion.
Can a PVC board be painted?

Your print-ready files can be in either PDF, JPG, or TIFF formats. You don't need to add any bleed for PVC jobs, so just build your artwork to the final trim size.
